From nobility to the common man, from robber to rebel, in Myth of Empires, one food item in particular is beloved by all: the ubiquitous Wotou.
Wotou is a northern specialty. In the past, corn was the primary coarse grain of the north. Cornmeal and soybean flour are mixed at a 30:70 ratio and made into a flatbread, which is then molded into a conical shape. A recess is left in the bottom of the cone, which gives the wotou its unique shape. Wotou comes in many different flavors; in addition to the standard cornmeal wotou, there are sweet potato wotou, mixed grain wotou, and more. The main difference between the wotou and the steamed bun (also called “mantou”) is that the wotou’s flour has not been fermented, yet its taste is still preserved after cooking. It makes for a very filling treat.
As an ancient delicacy, it is difficult to trace the origins of the wotou. Some documents dating back to the Ming dynasty describe wotous made of glutinous rice flour shaped somewhat like sticky rice dumplings and stuffed with sugar, while the wotou that were to be eaten while working in the fields would be made of mixed grain instead. These records also indicate that this delicacy was extremely popular at the time.
Wotou was not only a staple of the common northerner’s diet, either. It is said that Emperor Qianlong and Empress Dowager Cixi were big fans, as well. There were even restaurants in Beijing that would imitate the kind of food that the imperial family would eat. Among the food offered there would invariably be wotou, albeit made with chestnut flour and white sugar instead of simple cornmeal. The wotou in Myth of Empires is made using sorghum flour and low-quality flour at a ratio of 1:1.
Wotou are one of the main foods in the game and can be unlocked at Lv. 23, while the requisite sorghum flour and low-quality flour can only be obtained through planting. Sorghum and low-quality wheat do not require a lot of water or fertilizer, so they can be planted on almost any field. They also mature quickly and can be harvested several times a day. The sorghum and wheat are then ground into flour using a mill, whereupon the wotou can finally be made.
Wotou in Myth of Empires is extremely filling; it only takes one sorghum flour and one low-quality flour to get your Fullness up to 100, which means that so long as you’ve got some in your inventory, you won’t need to worry about fighting on an empty stomach.
As added benefits, wotou is high in dietary fiber, low in fat, and low in calories, so it is a delicacy that is sure to keep your character’s tummy happy.
Some will say, an empire can’t be built off wotou alone; this isn’t Myth of Wotou, after all. And it’s true, there are many different types of food in MoE: there are Bean Paste Pork Buns, Fresh Meat Cakes, Tofu Fish Porride, and many other options to choose from, and these can offer an even higher Fullness bonus than wotou do. But sometimes you’re busy with other tasks, and you feel like eating something simple, and that is where the wotou shines.
